The canna plants are large tropical perennial herbs with broad flat leaves that grow out of a stem in a long narrow roll. The flowers are typically red, orange, or yellow or any combination of those colors. The wild species often grow to 2-3 meters but there is a wide variation in size among cultivated plants. The leaves are typically solid green but some cultivars have brownish, maroon. The canna flowers attract hummingbirds.
Planting and care
Water: Rainfall is less than 1 inch per week, and water container-grown plants frequently to keep soil moist. Water freely in a dry spell.
Temperature: Dry area at 45 to 55 degrees F.
Soli: The soil drains well. If there are still water puddles 5-6 hours after a hard rain, scout out another site. Or amend the soil with the addition of organic material to raise the level 2"-3" to improve the drainage.
Fertilizer: The ideal time to fertilize your canna is right before it produces its first flower of the season. Sprinkle 2 lbs. of 5-10-5 fertilizer for every 100 square feet of canna bed. Don’t place the fertilizer right at the base of the plants, but about 6 inches away. Water the soil until it’s saturated, to soak the product to the plants roots.
